Save the Rhino International

Save the Rhino, which was registered as a charity in 1994, is committed to ensuring the survival of the rhinoceros species in the wild. The charity works in close consultation with managers and communities in wildlife areas and provides direct support for rhino and community-based conservation projects in Africa and Asia. By providing a secure environment for rhinos, Save the Rhino also ensures the survival of numerous other species that share their habitat.

Historically, much of our funding has come from people taking part in sponsored events, such as the London and New York Marathons. In the last couple of years however, we have begun to develop other sources of income, such as a membership programme, web-based donations towards particular projects, and by submitting applications to trusts and foundations.

What we do

We save rhinos by raising public awareness of the need for rhino conservation and by fundraising in the UK and USA in order to support field projects in Africa and Asia. Money saves rhinos by paying for:

  • Community conservation and education programmes that develop sustainable methods by which local communities can creatively manage natural resources;
  • Anti-poaching and monitoring patrols, which detect and deter poachers and gather information about rhino ranges and numbers;
  • Translocations, so that rhinos from established populations can be reintroduced to former habitats;
  • Research into the threats to rhino survival and alternatives to the use of rhino horn.

Komatsu Division and save the rhino

Komatsu Division first decided to associate itself with the image of a rhino in May 2003, for the launch of the then new web site (www.komatsuforklift.net).
As a manufacturer of material handling equipment we wanted to link our company to the strong and powerful rhino and increase brand consciousness into the market. We wanted to communicate that we are Komatsu and we produce strong and reliable forklifts … always evolving, fast and resilient in every environment, just like rhinos.
“Think TOUGH....Think KOMATSU” became our slogan - coupled with the rhino image it has since been used for all publication materials, gadgets and promotional activities.

After using the rhino to help our marketing strategy, we wanted to do something to help rhinos in return and help ensure the survival of the rhinoceros species. That was when we met Save the Rhino International (SRI), who was initially contacted by Komatsu in the UK.

We now have hundreds of customers coveting our gadgets and impressed by our initiatives. During the IMHX trade show in the United Kingdom (March 2004) Komatsu, spearheaded by the UK office, created great excitement with a rhino themed stand. In collaboration with SRI, Komatsu spread the message regarding the plight of rhinos and raised L2000’s for the cause.
For the future, Komatsu have recently started to support Save the Rhino project’s to protect rhinos and their habitats. It is our aim to make you aware of Save the Rhino so we can gain your support for all our further initiatives.
